🛑 Top Technologists and Elon Musk Demand Immediate Pause of Advanced AI Systems

A coalition of over 500 technologists, engineers, and AI ethicists, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and “based AI” developer Elon Musk, have signed an open letter calling on AI labs to pause training on any AI systems more powerful than Open AI’s recently released GPT-4 for at least six months, citing potential risks to society and humanity. The letter argues that emerging AI systems currently lack meaningful safeguards or controls and calls on AI labs to implement and agree on a shared set of safety protocols to ensure systems are audited by independent experts. It also asks for policymakers to develop robust AI governance systems and watermarking tools to help distinguish between synthetic and real content.
