Japanese knotweed, a plant that can cause catastrophic damage to property values, has become an economic menace in the UK, with around 5% of homes now affected as it corrodes their value and can take over an entire garden, potentially resulting in billions of pounds worth of lost house prices. Eradication expert Gethin Bowes, who previously worked for Caerphilly and spent 18 years monitoring knotweed, says that while other invasives in Britain can be defeated by removing their seed pods, knotweed is far more elusive and formidable, with its underground rhizome making eradication a herculean task.

🏢 The Gentrification Font

Neutraface, a typeface known for its clean lines and legibility, has been dubbed the "unofficial font of gentrification", as the font has been increasingly used on buildings around the country, particularly for house numbers. While the font is favoured by designers for its minimalist elegance, it is also seen by many as a harbinger of displacement and gentrification, due to its associations with corporate branding and the Apple aesthetic. Despite this, the pervasiveness of the font does not necessarily indicate that gentrification is happening in a specific area, but it could signal that developers and owners are looking to court renters who can afford to pay a higher price for living there.
