Harvard researchers found an AI model outperformed emergency doctors in triage diagnoses and treatment planning from text records, especially under time pressure. Experts see it as a powerful “second-opinion” tool, not a replacement, with ongoing concerns over safety, bias and accountability.
Researchers used AI protein-design tools to re-engineer E. coli’s ribosomal small subunit so none of its proteins require the amino acid isoleucine. The modified cells grow slower but survive, showing life can function with a reduced 19–amino-acid genetic toolkit.

University of Oregon chemist Christopher Hendon repurposed a battery-testing potentiostat to send electric current through coffee, objectively measuring roast color and strength. This electrochemical “fingerprint” better predicts flavor, helping baristas consistently reproduce preferred taste profiles and spot roasting defects.
