Microsoft's gaming division has overtaken Windows to become the company's third-largest business thanks to the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard. And here I thought the only way gaming could overtake Windows is if Solitaire got a major update and became the most addictive game ever.
Companies using AI need to establish policies to address ethical, practical, and legal issues. Imagine if we had AI guardrails in our personal lives too. "Sorry, you can't leave the house wearing that outfit, it violates the AI Fashion Police guidelines."
General Motors is grappling with buggy software in its electric vehicles, causing flickering screens and glitchy charging. Turns out, making cars into "supercomputers on wheels" isn't as easy as updating your phone. Looks like the auto industry needs an IT team that can handle more than just "rebooting" the car.
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured stunning images of 19 nearby galaxies, revealing large spherical shells in the gas and dust. Astronomers believe these "holes" may have been created by exploding stars, which just proves that even in space, things can go boom!
OpenAI is making it easier to bring GPTs into conversations by allowing ChatGPT users to invoke them with a simple "@". But with all the "romantic" and politically mischievous chatbots flooding the GPT Store, moderation might just become the next popular profession! Better start studying "Chatbot Moderation 101"!
Google is making waves in Africa with the launch of its first cloud region in South Africa. Now, African businesses can deploy cloud resources closer to home, giving them the power to scale, innovate, and compete. With this news, Google is really johannes-burgling the African cloud market!
Well, well, well, it seems we have ourselves a good ol' existential crisis! The possibility that our universe is just a simulation, huh? Makes you wonder if someone's trying to win a cosmic game of The Sims. I can already imagine the "Player" frantically searching for the cheat codes.
Introducing the "Poem/1" clock, where AI and poetry collide. This whimsical timepiece will tell you the time with rhymes, even if it means fibbing a little. Just don't rely on it for rocket launches or athletic competitions. And hey, it may even come up with new words like "teason"!
China is aiming to hit the jackpot on the Moon with their upcoming Chang'e 7 mission. They're heading to the Shackleton crater in the south pole, where a sun-lit rim holds precious resources. It's like the Moon's own version of a luxury resort. Just don't expect room service.
Men, it's time to lace up those sneakers and hit the road! A Swedish study has found that aerobic exercise like jogging, cycling, or swimming can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 35%. So, gentlemen, let's jog our way to a healthier prostate and a longer life.
☠️ Postmortem of the day
A change to the core application that manages the underlying infrastructure for the Common Runtime included a dependency upgrade that caused a timing lock issue that greatly reduced the throughput of our task workers. This dependency change, coupled with a failure to appropriately scale up due to increased workload scheduling, caused the application's work queue to build up. Contributing to the issue, the team was not alerted immediately that new router instances were not being initialized correctly on startup largely because of incorrectly configured alerts. These router instances were serving live traffic already but were shown to be in the wrong boot state, and they were deleted via our normal processes due to failing readiness checks. The deletion caused a degradation of the associated runtime cluster while the autoscaling group was creating new instances. This reduced pool of router instances caused requests to fail as more requests were coming in faster than the limited number of routers could handle. This is when customers started noticing issues with the service.

Inconsistency leads to unhappy customers and a bad reputation. Whether you choose strong, weak, or eventual consistency, finding the right balance is important. SillySystemDesign strikes again! 🫑
Once upon a time in Tech Land, there was a housemaid named Martha who was worried about her son Bob's road rage incident. She roped in her brother, Uncle Paul, who went on a wild adventure involving lawyers, courts, and police stations. It's like a tech version of "Law and Order: OAuth2 Unit."

Linux memory management is like a magician's disappearing act. It's all about making the most out of limited resources and making processes believe they have endless memory. Swap this, allocate that, and voila! It's like a virtual reality game, but with less dragons and more paging.
A mapper in software development is like a real-life translator. It takes an object in one language (data structure) and converts it into another language (object type). Like a multilingual AI, it helps with DTO mapping, view model mapping, database entity mapping, and even testing and mocking. Impressive!
